For the start of the school year, the canton of Berne was able to provide the indefinite positions which were vacant at the compulsory school. The collaboration between the canton, the municipalities, the professional associations and the high educational schools to strengthen the school thus bears its fruit.

(Keystone-ATS) For several years, the Directorate of Public Instruction and Culture (INC) has been acting in consultation with its partners to design improvements and measures aimed at recruiting and retaining school staff, the canton of Bern on Thursday.

“This close collaboration with our partners allows us to permanently develop new measures adapted to the situation to strengthen the school,” noted State Councilor Christine Häsler. For the director of public education, this approach is therefore bearing fruit.

Support for school departments

The management of compulsory education establishments will benefit from additional positions from August 11, a measure already in force for a year for the masters of class. The canton believes that thus the school departments will have much more resources to accomplish their tasks.

To fight against the shortage of teachers, a phenomenon which essentially concerns the German -speaking part, the canton has been offering for a few years summer camps to support people who teach without a diploma. In the French -speaking part, the Haute École Pédagogique Bejune combined with the canton of Bern to allow students of 3rd year to ensure replacements and courses in pairs.

Statistically, the number of pupils in the institutions of the childish school and compulsory education records for the start of the 2025 school year a slight progression: it should be around 116,500 students, 1143 more than a year earlier.

Back to school takes place on Monday August 18 in the Bernese Jura and Bienne and August 11 in the German -speaking part of the canton.
