Jay MaidmentPromoted Star late, Pedro Pascal is the new Hollywood darling. Son of Chilean political refugees exiled in the USA, the charismatic and cool an actor of 50 years has long struggled before accessing notoriety by playing substitution fathers in the series “The Mandalorian” and “The Last of Us”, which earned him the “Internet Daddy”. After Cannes, where he recently presented the Western “Eddington”, and the romantic comedy “Materialists”, we find him in the new Marvel blockbuster.
“The fantastic 4: first steps” reboots in a retro-futuristic universe inspired by the sixties this family of superheroes which has not really ignited the box office in the past: scientific genius to elastic members Reed Richards (alias M. Fantastic), his wife Sue Storm (the invisible woman), Johnny Storm (La Torche Huma) and Ben Grimm (the thing). A family that is growing with the arrival of Bébé Franklin and must save the land from galactus claws and silver surfer. Interview.
You have embodied endearing substitution fathers on the small screen with the success we know. ANDDid you have an obviousness to get the role of a superhero that becomes a dad?
It was not easy because I was the last to integrate the casting. I’m glad you consider these characters that I played endearing because many other people would describe them as grumps! But it is the first time that I have the opportunity to be in a couple, married and becoming a parent in a family rather than a lone wolf who learns to become sensitive and love someone. The identity of Reed Richards is built around his relationship with his family in the fantastic 4 and especially his marriage to Sue. And then around the growing responsibility that he feels towards them and the world by becoming a father.
Why do you say having been intimidated to play this character?
Because of everything I just told you. (Laughs.)
How did you approach it?
I found that this guy is so brilliant and comfortable when solving the most complex scientific equations to find solutions to everything and understand how the universe works. But he has much more difficulty in understanding the dynamics of relationships, family and love. Note how to evolve in a couple and a family as husband, friend and father, of course. The only way he has to manage this is to make the world as sure as possible rather than just being present to live this experience. The director Matt Shakman guided me to achieve this emotional journey because I am not a father in life.
How do you play a genius whose intelligence isolates him from the world and his family?
Having such an intellect makes a little innocent when it comes to human relationships. Reeds tends not to say what needed or not to understand what is going on when it is with people. It was fun to create a singular behavior around that.
Can we say that this is a more adult superhero film?
I think that the story around couple relationships, marriage and becoming parents contains more adult themes, but it is a story and an adventure for the whole family. It is a charming and disarming world of innocence, optimism and compassion for humanity which is fun, from an aesthetic point of view too. Personally, I melted every time I put a foot on the set because it evoked all the nostalgia and the vintage and futuristic style that I adored kid.
