50e Athletissima: The best memory of the “location of the stage”
Melissa Gutschmidt grew up with Athletissima close to her house. The Vaudoise tells the moment that marked her young career.
“My most striking moment in Athletissima was in 2021 and it was really incredible for me. I barely returned from the junior world championships, who had argued in Kenya. I had won the bronze medal there (Editor’s note: in 11”51, behind the Jamaican Tina Clayton and the Namibian Beatrice Masilingi). I came back to Switzerland barely two or three days before the meeting and I was still aligned with 100 meters, individually.
I didn’t think I was doing well, I was tired of the trip and despite everything, I had broken the Swiss record for under 20s (Editor’s note: in 11”37, he still holds). Afterwards, on adrenaline, I participate in the relay. It was the perfect evening, I was on my little cloud. I came back to Switzerland to celebrate my medal with my loved ones and I went on a super competition at La Pontaise.

Pascal Muller/freshfocusIt is true that we are lucky in the area, with this meeting of Athletissima, but also that of Zurich. We are a small country, but we still have a lot of good level athletes and many different sports federations have their headquarters close to us. It also helps.
Athletes from around the world like to come to us and it’s cool. It pushes a lot to show athletics to the Swiss. The two Lausanne and Weltklasse competitions show the example of young generations and a wider audience allows Swiss to motivate themselves for this sport and to progress. ”
