THE electric vehicles generally benefit from lower insurance premiums than their thermal equivalents, reveals an online comparator analysis Comparis broadcast this Tuesday. In 70% of the cases studied, insurance for electric cars are cheaper, with savings that are up to 553 francs on complete CASCO insurance, according to this comparison relating to seven electric models and their thermal equivalents.

However, the advantage varies considerably depending on the driver’s profile. Experienced drivers are clearly favored, with lower bonuses in 88% of cases. In Zurich for example, an experienced motorist pays 1309 francs to ensure an electric Mercedes-Benz, while a young driver will spend 3,249 francs for the same model, or nearly 2,000 additional annual francs.

It’s expensive in Ticino, Geneva and Lausanne

The comparis study identifies important regional disparities. The premiums are particularly high in Ticino, Geneva and Lausanne. Conversely, Bienne, Basel, Bern and Winterthour are among the cities where the prices are the most advantageous. For example, a young driver will pay 3721 francs to ensure a Mercedes EQA Électric in Ticino, against only 2,736 francs in Bienne.

Experienced drivers obtain the most substantial reductions with electric hyundai in Ticino and Saint-Gall, where insurance costs approximately 11% less than for the equivalent thermal model. Winterthour’s experienced drivers can save more than 10% by opting for a Mercedes-Benz EQA 250 or an electric Volvo Ex40.

“One of the reasons is that young drivers underestimate the acceleration of electric vehicles in urban traffic,” said Harry Büsser, car insurance expert at Comparis. The most striking example concerns young Ticino drivers who have to pay 34% more to ensure a Mercedes-Benz EQA 250 electric compared to its thermal equivalent, mainly due to its rapid acceleration capacity from 0 to 50 km/h.

The expert recommends comparing insurance costs before any purchase of an electric vehicle, the difference that can represent several hundred annual francs. He also recalls that many cantons offer significant reductions in electric vehicle tax, constituting an additional advantage to take into account in the purchasing decision.
