The tropical storm Wipha, which has been hitting Thailand for ten days, has already killed six people and affected more than 230,000 people across the country, the authorities in charge of disaster management said on Saturday.

(Keystone-ATS) Since July 21, the heavy rains that accompany this storm have led to floods in 12 provinces, mainly in the north and the center of the kingdom, according to the Thai department for the prevention and mitigation of disasters.

“We closely monitor the consequences of Wipha and coordinate with the affected provinces in order to help those who need it,” she said in a statement published on her Facebook page.

On social networks, images show muddy flood waters, sandbags stacked in front of the houses and residents moving in plastic boats through the submerged streets.

According to the meteorological services of the Kingdom, precipitation should calm down in the coming days.

The monsoon season (May-October) brings a lot of heavy rains each year, but scientists have alerted to the risk of intensification of weathering linked to climatic disruption

In 2011, more than 800 people died in the worst monsoon floods for decades in the country.
