The Air Canada Forced Air Canada agent to file a strike notice to end unpaid work, according to the SCFP

The Air Canada component of the SCFP filed a 72 -hour strike notice from Air Canada after the airline refused to recognize that on -board agents should be paid for all their working time. Air Canada reacted by depositing a 72-hour lockout notice.

“Over the past nine months, we have presented solid proposals and based on wages and unpaid work, all based on equity and industry standards,” said Wesley Lesosky, president of the Air Canada component of the SCFP. “Air Canada’s response to our proposals clearly shows one thing: it is not interested in solving these crucial issues. »»

The airline also refuses to increase the salaries of on -board agent to align them with industry standards, inflation or even the federal minimum wage. The salaries of the on -board agent at the start of their career has only increased by $ 3 an hour since 2000, while inflation increased by 69 % during the same period.

“Our local sections had to set up food banks in our union offices for junior members who cannot afford to pay them to the grocery store,” Wesley Lesosky said. “Our members need, and deserve, a fair salary increase which allows everyone to face the increase in the cost of living and which makes our junior poverty on the junior edge agent. »»

Air Canada’s offer of an 8 % salary increase in the first year would not even compensate for the 9 % loss of purchasing power suffered by the on -board agents during their previous employment contract. It is in fact a drop in salary.

Air Canada clearly relies on the fact that the federal government will come to its rescue by bypassing the right of on -board agent, protected by the Charter, to use pressure means.

“While we were united and mobilized, Air Canada did not want to negotiate in good faith,” added Wesley Lesosky. “Rather, she asked the federal government to intervene and deprive us of our rights. Despite the company’s odious attempts to try to flout our rights protected by the Charter in advance, we remain at the negotiating table, ready to negotiate and avoid an interruption of the services. »»
