The Algerian Consulate of Toulouse in the crosshairs

Friday, July 18, 2025, the Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau, attacked the Algerian authorities, notably reproaching them for the issuance of passports to “illegals”, and affirmed his intention to hinder the circulation of “members of the nomenclatura” responsible for “denigration of France”.

He has particularly Targeted the Algerian Consulate in Toulouse :

“The Algerian Consulate of Toulouse issued hundreds of passports to illegal immigrants,” accuses the minister in an interview Au Figaroby specifying that he was going to instruct the prefects “not to recognize these documents, distributed under these conditions”, for the issuance of residence permits.

He announces several measures to come

Stressing the importance of “reciprocity” in the bilateral relationship, he believes that “today, Algeria refuses this reciprocity by not respecting the 1994 agreement” devoted in particular to the resumption of expelled Algerian nationals.

“I will also ask my services to prepare several measures to prevent the arrival, establishment or traffic in France of the members of the nomenclatura involved in the denigration of France,” said the minister.

Saying “very favorable to the release of the 1968 agreements” on immigration, which confer a special status to the Algerians, Bruno Retailleau judges that “if they are not denounced before the end of this five -year term, it will have to be done after the next presidential election”.

There is however “an urgent measure” according to him: “block at European level the current negotiation on the association agreement” with the European Union because “Algeria wins much more than Europe, with preferential customs tariffs”.

Asked about a possible resignation linked to the Algerian file, Mr. Retailleau assures that “this is what the Algerian power seeks to obtain” and “it would be for them a victory”.
“In the Algerian question, there is the future of our two compatriots” imprisoned in Algeria, the writer Boualem Sansal and journalist Christophe Gleizes, he notes, believing that “the diplomacy of good feelings has failed”.

He must meet Emmanuel Macron

“I will tell the President of the Republic, which I have to see next week. You have to change your tone, assume a balance of power that the Algerian power itself chose, ”he assures.

More broadly on immigration, the Minister indicates that he “proposed to the Prime Minister an increase of 160 million euros in stamp law in the field of asylum and immigration”.
