The City of Geneva asks the Federal Council to adopt strong measures to put an end to the atrocities committed in Gaza. The municipality wants Switzerland to do pressure on Israel in order to enforce international humanitarian law and that it began the process of recognition of the State of Palestine.

(Keystone-ATS) “Words are no longer sufficient,” the administrative council of the city of Geneva said on Friday in a press release. The executive recalls in particular “the death of more than a thousand civilians during food distributions since May, the unbearable deaths of hungry children” and the incessant bombardments on Gaza City and on camps of displaced people.

“This is an ethnic cleaning in progress, under the eyes of the world: no one will be able to say that he did not know,” said the Administrative Council. He insisted on the “historic and moral responsibility” of Switzerland, guardian of the Geneva conventions.

The City of Geneva notably requests that the Federal Council imposes an embargo on all products from the colonies and on the import and export of armaments. She also asks Switzerland to position herself as a mediator, in order to work on a sustainable crisis.

Last May, the city of Geneva had, jointly with Lausanne, appealed to the Federal Council so that it is clearly positioned in the face of the ongoing conflict in Gaza. This declaration had been taken up by many municipalities and large cities in Switzerland.
