The European Union is launching an application prototype to check the age of minors online

The age verification application will allow digital platforms to ensure that their users are very major, while retaining total control of their personal information, such as the exact age or their identity.

The presentation of the prototype marks the start of the pilot phase. Denmark, Spain, France, Italy and Greece will be the first to test it and may, if necessary, personalize the model with the aim of launching national age verification applications. The application is planned in the Digital Services Act guidelines, the digital services directive. These have also just been published. They guarantee a high level of security, confidentiality and safety on online platforms.

They recommend reducing the exposure of minors to addictive design practices that can stimulate addictive behavior, to combat cyberbullying, to give users more control over what they see, to protect against harmful content and to minimize unwanted contacts from foreigners. “”The guidelines on the protection of minors for online platforms, combined with the new age verification plan, constitute a big step forward in this regard. Platforms have no excuse for pursuing practices that endanger children“, Ensured the vice-president in charge of technological sovereignty Henna Virkunnen.
