The High Authority for Health (HAS) rendered its recommendations on Friday, July 18, concerning adults wishing to engage in a gender transition, an opinion expected in particular by associations for the defense of LGBT +rights, which regularly report obstacles encountered in their care path by the persons concerned.
“Regarding surgical management, the HAS recommends responding to surgery requests for trans people”can we read in his opinion. The High Authority recognizes as such, in its opinion, that “The conditions of access to quality care remain very heterogeneous on the territory”highlighting a risk ” renunciation of care “, “Self -medication” and mental disorders “Can go as far as suicide”.
However, she added, she adds, “Deliver clear, loyal and adapted preoperative information on surgical terms, risks (short or medium term) and the character of certain acts for which a period of reflection is provided, in order to allow the person to give their informed consent”.
No announcement concerning minors
“A systematic psychiatric opinion is not recommended”more “Psychological support can be provided according to the needs of the person”said Claire Compagnon, president of the HAS recommendations committee, at the same press conference at the body’s headquarters in Saint-Denis. Transitional care is not “Not a comfort but a vital issue”she added.
On the other hand, the HAS announced that it would not be pronounced before 2026 with regard to the care of minors wishing to start a gender transition, reporting a “Absence of consensus” at this stage.
“We note that there is a consensus on adults and that we do not find the same consensus on minors”said the president of the HAS, Lionel Collet, at a press conference, stating that the work on the development of recommendations for minors will be implemented “In early 2026”.
