The man who jumped from the fourth floor to escape the flames died, This Tuesday, July 22 at the hospital. The claim broke out at the start of the morning, in the Liberty district in La Roche-sur-Yon.
Around 9 a.m., a fire spread to an apartment on the fourth floor of the Liberté building, Place Liberté. The occupier, trapped by the flames, threw himself into the void, his cat in his arms.
According to several testimonies, The relatively old man had just lost his wife a month ago. The day before, he had thrown his things through the window, including his vinyls.
When the fire spread, workers working in the building opposite, following another fire in May, tried to help him with their nacelle, in vain.
The man did not want help when his apartment was blazing.
It was when workers resolved to leave that he jumped. According to witnesses, the suicide thesis cannot be excluded.
Seriously injured, he had been transported to hospital under respiratory assistance. He did not survive his injuries.
Six apartments destroyed
The fire continued to spread to neighboring housing. Twelve apartments were completely ravaged on the fifty of the building.
“An entire life that goes up in smoke,” says a resident of the neighborhood, upset.
According to another resident, smoke was visible “from the four sands of sands from 8:55 am”. On social networks, some residents have expressed their concern in the face of rescue intervention time.
“I saw the fire at 9:20 am, I do not understand that they take as long to come,” confided a neighbor.
At 9:55 a.m., significant resources were deployed. Eight fire trucks, several light vehicles and police were mobilized to secure the perimeter and evacuate the district. Multiple explosions were heard on site.
