In recent days, a shared publication on social networks has sowed concern for many dog owners in the Mouret region. The message said that several dogs were “dying in the region because of leptospirosis”, and that as a result, walks and swimming were prohibited.
Contacted, the veterinary firm of the Mouret denies this information. A single case of leptospirosis has been confirmed, in a young dog who died.
What is leptospirosis?
Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that mainly affects the kidneys and the liver. It is transmitted by the urine of infected rodents, which can contaminate stagnant water. If a dog drinks this water, it can contract the disease. Symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, fatigue and loss of appetite.
The disease can be treated by antibiotics if it is detected early. In more serious cases, dialysis or transplants may be necessary. Dogs vaccinated according to the veterinary calendar are generally protected, but zero risk does not exist.
Veterinarians therefore recall some precautionary measures:
– avoid letting dogs drink in puddles or other stagnant waters;
– offer a clean water bowl before and after each outing;
– Rave the walks during periods of high heat, to reduce the risks.
In case of suspicious symptoms, the reflex remains the same: quickly consult a veterinarian.
