After a slight decrease in 2024, the prices of school supplies recorded this year an increase of 2 %, according to an estimate communicated Tuesday by the association for the defense of Consumers UFC-Que Choisir, which points to an outlined in early September. “Overall, the prices of school supplies are maintained at a high level,” told AFP Noé Baudoin, responsible for studies at the UFC-Que Choisir, in the wake of “the high increase in 2023.”
An increase without reason
Out of 118 products analyzed by the association between early July 2024 and early July 2025, 41 saw their prices increase by 2 % or more, 23 recorded a drop of at least 2 %, and 54 remained stable. According to the association, the increase of 10 % in 2023 of the price of supplies, due to the surge in raw material prices – in particular paper pulp and oil – has never been completely erased while the cost of these materials “returned to the lowest.
“When the raw materials are soaring, prices are directly impacted. On the other hand, we do not really observe it on ray prices when they drop, ”regrets Noah Baudoin.
Buy during the summer
Another study of the study: the time of purchases has a significant impact on the budget. Prices tend to drop slightly during the summer but have a peak at the start of the school year in early September. “The big advice is really not to shop at the start of the school year, even if it is tempting to wait for the instructions of the teachers,” notes Noé Baudoin.
