The latter therefore decided to launch a campaign specifically aimed at video game enthusiasts. Anyone registering as a donor obtains access to a MOD (an extension of a game developed by the community) for Minecraft, Baldur’s Gate or Fortnite, three popular multiplayer games.
With this mod, each time a player dies in the game, eight of his friends receive an additional life. A way to represent the fact that one organ donor can save up to eight lives.
“Most people know that Belgium is working with an opt-out system, but they underestimate the importance of registering actively,” said Stephanie Keustermans, founder of Reborn-to Be Alive. “Too often, families doubt, refuse or simply ignore what the deceased person would have liked. With Virtual Donors, we want to open the debate from a different angle: registration is not a simple administrative formality, but an act of responsibility.”
According to figures from the SPF Public Health, around 15 % of potential donations do not lead, because relatives decide not to give their agreement.
