Sudan army head Abdel Fattah Al-Burhane and the American emissary Massad Boulos met in Switzerland. They discussed an American peace plan aimed at ending the civil war, two Sudanese government sources said on Tuesday.
General Burhanne and the American emissary for Africa had a three-hour meeting on Monday during which they discussed a proposal submitted by the United States for a global cease-fire to Sudan and the delivery of humanitarian aid, ‘said a high-ranking government source.
The conflict that broke out in April 2023 in Sudan between the army and the paramilitaries of the rapid support forces (FSR) made tens of thousands of deaths, caused the movement or flight abroad of millions of inhabitants and trained what the UN describes as the worst humanitarian crisis in the world.
Previous mediation efforts carried out by the United States and Saudi Arabia have never resulted in a cease-fire. The meeting on Monday has been the meeting at the highest level for months, while Washington seems to intensify its diplomatic efforts to impose peace.
An attempt by the United States to rally the external powers considered to be the most influential on the two camps, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, had failed due to the disagreement of these last two countries on the role of the army in a process of transitional peace.
General Burhane ‘told Boulos on Monday that the FSRs have no political role in Sudan’, one of the government sources on condition of anonymity told AFP. According to this source, the head of the army had received the American plan before going to Switzerland and he was back in Sudan on Tuesday morning.
On the ground, the fighting knows no respite. The army resumed in March the capital Khartoum while the paramilitaries intensify their attacks to seize El-Facher, the only provincial capital of the vast Western region of Darfur to escape their control.
