In general, iPhone are seen as the most “safe” smartphones. Something that causes excess of confidence? A study recently conducted by Malwarebytes tends to demonstrate that iPhone users are more reckless than owners of smartphones running on Android.

Victims of scams and risk behaviors: iPhone users more often affected?

The iPhone ecosystem, iOS, is one of the main arguments that pushes its users to stay there. It must be said that Apple makes sure to place its users in a comfortable cocoon with products interacting perfectly with each other; Airpods, iPad, Apple Watch, MacBook, iPhone, etc.

Likewise, iOS is developed to offer a fluid experience, but also safe for its users. The system is more closed than on Android, where you can very easily install applications outside the Google Store for example. Something that seems to push iPhone owners to an excess of confidence. According to a study by Malwarebytes out of 1,300 people in the United States, Germany, Switzerland and Austria, 53 % of iPhone users questioned say they have already been victims of an online scam, compared to 48 % for Android users.

This is not so much a lack of security on the side of the iPhone, but rather more reckless attitudes from users. On the side of Android, being generally more exposed, users tend to demonstrate more caution.

And for proof:

  • 47 % of iPhone users admitted to having bought on an unknown site simply because the price was more attractive, compared to 40 % of Android users. Something that increases the chances of seeing your data is stolen from personal data.
  • 41 % of iPhone users also sent a direct message to a seller on social networks to obtain a reduction code, Against only 33 % of the Android side

The observation is clear: according to the study conducted by Malwarebytes, iPhone users have an increased propensity to give in to dubious offers or make interactions that are not very secure online.

IPhone users believe “falsely” in safety

Beyond risk behavior, the study also highlights more caution on the side of Android users questioned, which adopt more “safe” attitudes as to the use of their smartphone.

  • Only 21 % of iPhone users say they have installed mobile security software, compared to 29 % Androidians.
  • 35 % of iOS users use a separate password for each online account, compared to 41 % of Android users.
  • In the end, 55 % of iPhone owners think that their device is perfectly secure without the need for additional actions, compared to 50 % for Android. Excessive confidence in the reputation of iOS seems to lead to a form of complacency.

In reality, no smartphone, whether on the side of Android or iOS can guarantee 100%safe navigation. If options make it possible to detect spam, you should be careful to have secure passwords, to be vigilant when you connect to public Wi-Fi networks and check the reliability of a site before making a purchase. And above all, never click on questionable links as if to receive a so-called package …
