The Meta group launched Threads, a new social network associated with Instagram, in 2023 in order to offer an alternative to Elon Musk’s X platform. And, little by little, he gains in popularity. The proof: today, Threads already has more than 400 million active users per month. This was announced by Mark Zuckerberg on his account, while the social network celebrated its two years in July. The growth of the social network is, in any case, impressive, since it still had only 350 million active users per month in April.
If Threads retains this growth rate, it could quickly exceed its competitor X, the former Twitter. Since leaving the scholarship, X has not regularly shared its number of users on a regular basis. However, in April, the former CEO of X, Linda Yaccarino, indicated that the social network had 600 million active users per month.
An increasingly autonomous platform of Instagram
While Threads is gaining popularity, it is becoming more and more independent of Instagram. For example, in July, Meta equipped the social network with her own messaging, different from that of Instagram. Otherwise, Threads has a particularity which differentiates it from the other Meta platforms: it is intended to be partially decentralized.
Indeed, Meta has designed Threads so that the social network supports the ActivityPub protocol, to allow users to interact with users of other social networks which also adopt this technology. Threads already tests in beta the possibility of sharing content in the fediverse (all the platforms that support the protocol).
“If you activate sharing with fediverse, users of other servers can look for and follow your profile, consult your publications, interact with your content and share your content with anyone, on their server or outside. On threads, you can search and follow users of other servers, and see who follows you and who loved your publication from other servers. from users from other servers ”indicates Meta on her site.
