“For several weeks, police services have noticed the resurgence of an already known phenomenon, namely scam in the prejudice of elderly and vulnerable people living alone at home”specifies the area. The suspects present themselves as workers specializing in the renovation of roofs and offer fictitious or overcharged work. In this case, a first individual presented himself with a nonagenarian victim claiming that his roof was damaged. He proposed to repair and repaint the cornices for 1,600 euros, claiming a cash deposit.
The next day, he returned with an accomplice. The two said that the roof had serious infiltrations and proposed to redo it for 60,000 euros, before reducing to 30,000 euros. The victim agreed to pay by transfer. Alerted by a neighbor, the police intervened immediately and arrested the two suspects, made available to the Brussels prosecutor’s office and presented before an investigating judge. The victim, aged 90 and living alone, was able to recover the 30,000 euros. Police call for vigilance and invite to report any suspicious behavior.
