The New York Stock Exchange ended up on Friday, the S&P 500 and the NASDAQ still showing closing records, thanks to the hope of a trade agreement between the European Union and the United States.
The Dow Jones index gained 0.47% to 44,901.92 points. The larger Standard & Poor’s 500 increased by 0.40% to 6,388.64 points. The Nasdaq Composite advanced 0.24% to 21,108.32 points.
Over the week, according to provisional data, the S&P 500 took 1.46%, the NASDAQ 1.02%and the Dow Jones 1.26%.
The S&P 500 has set a closing record every week, a “perfect” series that had not occurred since November 2021.
To good business results is added the optimism that prevails about the issue of customs duties, investors betting on a series of trade agreements between Washington and its partners, after the shock caused in early April by the announcement by Donald Trump of vast “reciprocal” taxes – mostly suspended in the process.
Donald Trump evaluated the chances of a trade agreement between the United States and the EU on Friday, saying that Brussels wanted “very seriously to conclude an agreement”. The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced that she would meet the American president in Scotland on Sunday for an interview dedicated to commercial negotiations.
“The market anticipates the fact that these agreements will be concluded,” notes Thomas Martin, manager of portfolios in Globalt. “Personally, I am a little more skeptical. You have to remain cautious, because if they do not come true, there will be a greater margin of disappointment.”
On the values side, outdoor Deckers, manufacturer of UGG boots and Hoka sneakers, saw its action climb 11% after reporting high demand internationally. The Intel semiconductor manufacturer abandoned 8.5% after announcing larger quarterly losses than expected.
