War in Ukraine: an “explosion” in a cornfield, a Russian drone Gerbera would have entered Polish territory

Polish police reported on Wednesday morning that they were informed of an explosion in a cornfield near Osiny, near Warsaw, not far from the border with Ukraine. No one injured was identified.

On the spot, the Polish armed forces indicated that they have found “an object which, according to the first estimates, could be an element of an old propeller engine”.

The army also said that “no violation of Polish airspace was recorded last night”.

The hypothesis of a privileged military drone

Questioned by the press, the regional prosecutor of Lublin, Grzegorz Trusiewicz, estimated that, “according to preliminary data, there is a very high probability” that it is a military drone. However, he considered it impossible, at this stage, to determine the origin or the trajectory.

Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamsz, had first mentioned the possibility of a civil or smuggling drone, hypotheses that the prosecutor then dismissed.

A suspected Russian model

According to Polish media citing sources at the Ministry of Defense, the device could correspond to a Russian drone of the gerbera type, often used as a lure in the strikes against Ukraine. In early August, a similar machine was discovered in Lithuania, pushing Vilnius to ask NATO to immediately strengthen its air defense.

Poland has already experienced similar incidents since the start of the war in Ukraine. In 2023, Warsaw announced that a Russian missile had crossed its air space towards Ukraine. In November 2022, a Ukrainian anti -aircraft defense missile fell into the Polish village in Przewodow, causing the death of two civilians.
