War in Ukraine: what is the Vector AI drone, with acoustic detectors supposed to be able to thwart the Russian attacks?

“Acoustic detection arrived above Ukrainian front lines,” said LinkedIn Florian Seidel, CO founder and CEO of Quantum Systems on August 10. The German manufacturer has delivered a Vector AI drone, with artificial intelligence and an acoustic detection system in Ukraine.

Its strength? “Vector AI is able to determine the direction and distance from artillery fire,” explains Florian Seibel, adding that flight autonomy can go “up to 4 hours”. “The future is unmanned and we direct it,” he says.

A 150 g sensor

The great autonomy of the drone is notably due to the weight of the sensor: 150 g. Its WASP acoustic sensor (Weles Acoustic Sensor Payload) can identify artillery or mortar shots up to 15 km, with a precision of 5 degrees at 5 km, indicates the specialized site Defense Express. Sufficient scope for approximate identification of enemy artillery.

Thanks to integrated artificial intelligence, the data collected can be quickly processed. This “medium endurance and fixed wing” drone provides operators “real-time and high resolution images for medium-range recognition missions”, can be read on the Quantum Systems website.

The next step is to automate the answer. As soon as a shot is detected, the camera could thus orient itself towards the origin of the shot.

“The tests we perform with the acoustic sensor are aimed, among other things, to demonstrate the military command the additional capacity of quantum system products for possible subsequent orders,” said the director of the Ukrainian office of Quantum Systems, Oleksandr Berezhnyi in Militarnyi.
