Representatives of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of Rwanda, as well as observers of the United States, the State of Qatar, the Republic of Togo (as a facilitator of the African Union) and the African Union Commission held, on Thursday, July 31, in Washington, the first meeting of the mixed committee for the surveillance agreement between the DRC and Rwanda.
This agreement was signed in Washington on June 27, 2025. This is indicated by a statement from the United States Department of State.
“The mixed surveillance committee is responsible for serving as a forum for the implementation of the peace agreement and the settlement of disputes. He is responsible for receiving complaints concerning the violations of the agreement, taking the appropriate measures to remedy these violations and to settle disputes amicably ”, explains the department’s press release.
During the first meeting, the parties chose their presidents for the Committee, adopted the terms of reference that will govern the future committee meetings, discussed the progress made in the implementation of the agreement and prepared the first meeting of the joint security coordination mechanism.
The African Union, the State of Qatar and the United States participated in these discussions in order to ensure complementarity and alignment between implementation efforts and current initiatives aimed at dialogue and lasting peace in the region.
The DRC and Rwanda both expressed their recognition for the invaluable contributions and joint efforts of the African Union, the United States and Qatar as partners in the search for a peaceful solution, noted the press release.
