What will the new OSMO 360 camera from the drone manufacturer are used for?

Dji has chosen its moment to launch its OSMO 360. In the middle of summer, while we are very much to immortalize images of our holidays, the drone manufacturer ventures on a land that he had not yet explored: that of the action cameras that film 360 °. What is this small camera, weighted with two ultra-angle lenses and capable of filming up to 8K, will it serve?

Panoramic views and sports exploits

It is an action camera. In a universe of monopolies (until then, only the cameras of the Insta360 brands and Gopro had a voice in the chapter), the OSMO 360 of DJI comes to flirt with fans of great air, those who want to capture the images of their exploits, but also nature lovers, eager to engrave the panoramic views of the landscapes they will have explored.

More simply, the OSMO 360 is also ideal for the vloggingwith real assets to film yourself, especially outdoors, turning images alternately with one or the other of the two on -board cameras, without interrupting the recording.

An exceptional field of vision

From a robust manufacturing as we have seen, waterproof up to less than 10 meters, weighing 183 g (it is lighter than a smartphone), the OSMO 360 is doomed to be fixed on a pole with magnetic hook system or with no screws. It can also be riveted on a tripod for fixed shots.

Whatever the option chosen, the device can film with one of its objectives, both alternately, or both simultaneously. On the one hand, traditional invoice with Grand-Angle will be generated; on the other will be produced 360 ° images thus covering an exceptional field of vision. No better to make views in height, like at the top of a mountain or a skyscraper.

The triggering of the shooting can be carried out from the camera, but also from a distance, using a small remote control, by voice, or a simple gesture of the hand.

Until 8K, 50 images/second

Photographing up to 120 megapixels, the OSMO 360 films in native 8K (up to 50 images/second). It is the first camera to offer such a resolution. For this, it has two sensors in 1 inch format. Particularity: these are square, which, according to DJI, makes it possible to reduce the deformations of the image on the edges.

The videos will be stored in the memory of 105 GB on board. This may seem substantial, but the files generated at 360 ° (“.OSV” files) are very greedy in storage space. However, it is possible to reduce resolution in the parameters.

More framing concern

The creative possibilities are innumerable here, with fairly classic predefined modes at DJI, but which always have their “wow” effect with friends and on networks: subject follow-up, slow motion, vortex (by rotating the camera above you with an optional accessory), dynamic accelerations, etc. The autonomy of a hundred minutes of the camera allows you to try everything by taking the time to adopt it.

If the images shot with a single objective require little work at the end of the shooting, those produced at 360 ° will require some efforts in post-production to select exactly the dedicated framing (using “key points”) in the captured video “sphere”. The advantage being here that we are not concerned with the framing when we turn … the DJI Studio assembly software or the manufacturer’s mobile application, however, allow you to obtain concrete results quickly.

It is also possible to keep the entire 360 ° filmed images to operate them using a VR helmet (at the price, of course, of a few hackers, by exporting its 360 files in MP4).

Sold from 479 euros (629 euros with additional batteries, “invisible” pole which fades at the time of assembly, etc.), the OSMO 360 of DJI is an equipment certainly expensive, but which meets a demanding expectation.

Not sure that Monsieur Tout-le-Monde needs it to immortalize his acrobranch afternoon during his summer vacation. On the other hand, its purchase makes sense if you travel a lot, that you are sporty … and creative!
