Will men finally assume the mental charge of contraception thanks to the YCT-529 pill perhaps soon marketed?

And yes, you are not dreaming, this famous scientific advance may finally come true (it may also once again be forgotten, we are not a guess). But hey, for the moment, it seems (really) to materialize. Tested on animals with an effectiveness of more than 99 %, this pill is without hormones and would act by blocking a key receiver linked to vitamin A, essential for the production of sperm. In other words: it temporarily interrupts male fertility, without touching sexual desire or the hormonal system. Perfect, right?

What are the effects of this contraceptive pill for men?

In a study published in the Nature scientific journal, laboratory scientists explain their motivations: “Since almost half of pregnancies in the United States and worldwide are unwanted, there is an urgent need for new contraceptive options for men and women“.

The 16 male volunteers recruited for tests have tolerated the pill well: “Unique doses up to 180 mg of YCT-529 had no effect on heart rate, hormones (folliculo-stimulating hormone, luteinizing and testosterone hormone), on globulin linking sex hormones or levels of inflammatory biomarkers, sexual desire or mood. In addition, no clear food effect has been observed.”

In any case, whether this new pill that is talking about it is a success or not, a new formula has been discovered (especially by passing by hormones), and will be able to be exploited later.

Why create a contraceptive pill for men?

The contraceptive load is almost exclusively based on women, and concerning the pill, it is 100 % on them. Creating a contraceptive pill for men would rebalance this responsibility within the couple and to offer men a reversible and non -invasive solution, in the same way as female contraception. It is also a response to an increasing demand for equality in the intimate sphere. Not to mention that this new option does not affect the hormonal system, which is not the case for women’s pills.

This would therefore open up a new field of possibilities for reproductive health, by offering men an active control over their fertility, but also by allowing women to lighten the charge (psychological and physical) linked to contraception.

What about Belgium?

Currently, a phase 1B/2A test with repeated doses over 28 and 90 days is in progress. If the drug passes this stage, it will be able to get closer to success. It could be marketed in 2029 (when the female pill celebrates its 70th anniversary) in the United States.

But the potential arrival of this pill will not happen overnight in Belgium. And for good reason: it will first have to go from test phases and authorization procedures at European level (if it arrives until then).
