United States | Coca-Cola announces a version with cane sugar

(New York) The American giant Coca-Cola confirmed on Tuesday, at the turn of the publication of its second quarter results, marketing “in the fall” in the United States of a cane sugar version of the famous drink.


“This addition is intended to be complementary to the solid portfolio of the group and to offer more choices for all occasions and for all preferences,” the company of Atlanta (Georgia) said in a press release, without giving precision.

“As part of our perpetual innovation program, in the fall in the United States, the group intends to launch an offer containing American cane sugar to extend its range of products under the Coca-Cola registered brand,” he simply explained.

US President Donald Trump had published a message on his Truth Social account, a message saying that Coca-Cola had accepted-at his request-to modify the composition of his production in the United States.

“I discussed Coca-Cola with the use of real cane sugar in coca in the United States, and they accepted,” he wrote.

“I would like to thank all Coca-Cola officials. It will be a very good decision on their part – you will see. It’s just better! He was delighted.

The group then reacted: “We appreciate the enthusiasm of President Trump for our emblematic brand”.

During an audioconferencing with analysts, the boss of Coca-Cola James Quincey insisted that it was a question of adding an option, and not of a substitution.

He also pointed out that cane sugar already appeared in the composition of other drinks from the group in the United States (silts, teas, vitamin and caffeinated drinks).

The agrifood giant uses conventional sucrose in Europe, but, for American consumers, it is replaced by corn syrup with high fructose (SGHF).

The SGHF spread to the United States in the 1970s thanks to the federal subsidies granted to corn producers and high customs duties on cane sugar.

SGHF and sucrose, more commonly called “table sugar”, are made up of fructose and glucose. But their structure differs: the SGHF contains fructose and free glucose (not linked) in variable proportions while, in sucrose, these two sugars are chemically linked.

However, these structural differences do not seem to have a significant impact on health. In 2022, clinical studies made it possible to see the lack of major difference between SGHF and sucrose in terms of weight gain or heart health.

The only notable difference: an increase in a marker of inflammation in people consuming SGHF.

American consumers sometimes have access to the Mexican Coca-Cola, already produced with cane sugar, sold more expensive in certain stores, because it is considered better in terms of flavor.

The American president is an inveterate drinker of Coca-Cola Light, watered down to Aspartame, a compound considered to be “perhaps carcinogenic” by experts from the World Health Organization.
