According to a new analysis. Nevertheless, vaping in adolescents seems to increase the risk of smoking, marijuana and alcohol consumption, as well as a number of health problems.
The study. Furthermore, published in the journal Tobacco Control, combines the use of e-cigarettes in adolescents and people in their twenties at high risks of asthma, cough, injuries and poor mental health.

According to the researchers. the links between vaping and other problems are clear enough to justify a stronger political action in order to prevent young people from becoming dependent on e-cigarettes.
These latest results “argue in favor of stricter public health measures to protect adolescents from the risks associated with vaping. ” said Su Golder, one of the study authors and an associate professor in health sciences at the University of York, in the United Kingdom.
The analysis focused on the data of 56 studies published between 2016 and 2024.
She revealed that young people who vapot are about three times more likely to start smoking than those who. do not use e-cigarettes. They are also much more likely to consume marijuana, alcohol and to engage in drinking.
Vaping in young people also presents vaping teens linked higher risk potential health risks. Asthma diagnostics. for example, were between 20 % and 36 % higher in young people who used e-cigarettes, and some studies have shown that they presented a higher risk of suicide and brain damage.
According to Greg Hartwell. one of the study’s authors and deputy teacher of clinic at the London School of Hygiene Tropical Medicine, some of these health problems could appear when young people go from the vapoteuse to traditional cigarettes.
“We have found coherent evidence concerning transitions to smoking which. of course, open the door to the multitude of harmful effects of conventional cigarettes,” said Hartwell.
However, the authors declared that additional research was necessary to determine if it is cause and effect relationships.
In the current state of things. the results “do not allow us to say what happened first,” said Ann McNeill, tobacco teacher at King College in London, who did not vaping teens linked higher risk participate in the study.
Regarding mental health problems. for example, it is not clear “if vaping has caused mental health or if the mental health has pushed young people to vape,” said McNeill.
