What is the Western Nile, this virus from Italy who has already killed nine and who worries?

Since the start of the year, at least nine deaths related to the virus have been identified in Italy, according to official figures, most of them in the region around the Italian capital. More than eighty other serious cases of infection are currently known. The septuagenarian, who has just been recently succumbing to the disease, has been hospitalized since mid-July in an establishment in the city of Latina, south of Rome, according to the authorities.

The virus was detected for the first time in the country in 1998. Last year, according to the National Health Institute, it caused 36 deaths. The virus is transmitted by the mosquito bite. In general, the virus often causes light symptoms, such as fever, headache, muscle pain, fatigue or nausea. Serious and fatal forms mainly affect the elderly or suffering from pre -existing diseases. In these cases, the symptoms are more important. Sudden paralysis, convulsions or losses of consciousness or even coordination disorders can be cited in particular.
