Municipal elections | Martinez Ferrada wants to improve safety in neighborhoods

The Montreal overall heads, Soraya Martinez Ferrada, would like to counter violence among young people, responsible for half of the crimes committed on Montreal territory. She notably undertook to increase by 10 million the budget allocated to prevention Montreal.

Mme Martinez Ferrada spoke to the media in Nelson-Mandela park in the Côte-des-Neiges district, where less than four months ago, a 16-year-old died after being stabbed.

“I think it is our responsibility to set up a series of measures that will offer alternatives to this violence that we see here and in other districts of Montreal. We must enhance our young people and their leadership, because the majority of them do not wish this violence, “she said.

Together Montreal proposes to increase the Montreal prevention budget by 10 million, bringing it to $ 60 million over four years to finance projects put forward by community organizations that focus on concrete actions.

The candidate for the town hall of Montreal also offers “to offer infrastructure and spaces for young people, so that they can practice cultural activities or play sports and meet safely, by extending the opening hours of these places to adapt to their atypical schedules”.

Mme Martinez Ferrada notably mentioned the possibility of arranging basketball grounds that would be lit until late in the evening. “Montreal-Nord and Saint-Michel still await their sports centers, and they are high-risk sectors of crime with young people. »»

Soraya Martinez Ferrada would like to set up a mixed public security committee in each district, which would include citizens, representatives of community organizations, religious leaders, SPVM members and municipal elected officials, to “create a social net” in the districts.

“We say that it takes a village to raise a child, but it also takes a village to join our young people and I believe that this dialogue between us will be extremely important,” said Mme Martinez Ferrada.

Last element put forward by the Montreal overall heads: surveillance of social networks.

“The territories of crime no longer exist. Social networks have no borders. So we have to equip the SPVM units to further increase the surveillance of social networks, the web and cyberenquets, because once once, these territories no longer exist, and that is what we see more and more on the ground, “she said.

Reaction to the incident of the Dickie-Mores park

Soraya Martinez Ferrada reacted to the arrest of Sergio Yanes Preciado, 23, accused of assault causing lesions. The young man attacked a man of Jewish confession in Dickie-Moore park, in the Villeray-Saint-Michel-Parc-Extension district on August 8. He would have sprayed it with water before beating it.

“It’s a dramatic incident,” reacted Mme Martinez Ferrada. No one wants to go to a park and feel threatened, even less beaten, whatever the reason. I am very happy to see that the SPVM survey quickly led to an arrest. It should restore confidence to citizens, their feeling of security. »»

Questioned about her position in relation to the incidents affecting the Jewish community, the town hall candidate said: “We want the Jewish community, but also all other communities feels safe and listened to. We are not going to tolerate any act of anti -Semitism and we will talk about it, because it is not the Montreal that we want, but again, all communities must feel safe. »»
