TORONTO, June 27, 2025 / CNW/ – The Parliament of Canada voted to give the cabinet new considerable powers in order to accelerate projects intended to “build the nation” under Bill C-5, potentially bypassing protections such as the Species Act in danger (Lep), at Canadian Environmental Protection Actthe Peach lawand the Law on the convention concerning migratory birds. As part of the efforts made to build the economy of our country, the Global Fund for Nature Canada (WWF-Canada) believes that any earth shovels must avoid negative repercussions on species in danger and habitats on which they depend.
Bill C-5 will allow the firm to derogate from key environmental protections for projects considered to be of national interest. If the uncertain geopolitical times require that Canada Supports its economy, almost half of Canadian (49 %) acknowledges that environmental regulations should not be bypassed (in English only) to accelerate things, according to new data from the Angus Reid Institute.
“Prosperity is possible without sacrificing wetlands, forests, marine ecosystems or species,” said Megan LeslieCEO of WWF-Canada. “Canadian people want growth that strengthens our economy and ecosystems. Bill C-5 can still lead to this future, but only if the government insists on projects that protect and restore the nature that supports us, not that damage it. »»
Ecosystems of Canada Support species, store carbon, filter water and provide several other essential services that help our communities adapt to climate change. Getting rid of the measures ensuring their protection risks leading to the repetition of the errors of the past – of errors that have harmed the indigenous communities, damaged the habitats for species and overwhelmed people across the country for generations. The way to the future is to pose the protection of nature as a prerequisite for development. This implies respect for the fundamental principles of environmental laws such as LEP and Peach law and follow a balanced path to prosperity.
The government should invest in large -scale catering of complex ecosystems, Aboriginal guard programs and renewable energy projects that have ecological integrity and sustainable development for basic principle. It is now time to finance nature -based solutions and develop conservation savings that strengthen communities, create jobs and help us protect us from the repercussions of climate change.
“We should be able to remember the era” build the Canada“For restored natural regions, respected indigenous rights and renewable energy created, not to have compared the nature of the point of no return,” said Megan Leslie. “We are ready to help the government, industry and our communities to succeed in this challenge. »»
