“Everything goes wrong, in Switzerland and abroad,” thundered the president of the UDC Marcel Dettling at the opening of the assembly of delegates of his party on Saturday in Schaffhouse. He believes that the country is fooled by the EU.
Before the members of the UDC gathered in general assembly, the Schwytzois national councilor and president of the UDC Marcel Dettling was worried about the “drop in prosperity and the increase in crime” in Switzerland. He is concerned in particular by what he calls the “EU membership treaty and its 2228 pages” (the bilateral agreement III, note) and by the “customs hammer” represented by the 39% surcharge imposed by the United States on Swiss exports.
Marcel Dettling also spoke of “deception” by evoking the F-35 and the former Federal Consulting Viola Amherd. The latter negotiated the contract of these American combat aircraft “without fixed price,” he criticized. Now today, it turns out that these devices “will cost about a billion more francs”.

Against immigration, population growth and the EU
The morning was devoted to reaffirming the strong themes of the UDC. A series of speakers have warned against the misdeeds of immigration to Switzerland and the throes of the population increase for the country. All in a decorum specific to UDC assemblies: Swiss flags, brass band and halberds surrounding the speaker, a symbol of defense of the country.
In a context where Switzerland and its economy are mainly concerned with customs taxes imposed by the President of the United States Donald Trump, the party tries to put its favorite theme at the center of the debate: the European Union.
If the president of the UDC still mentioned the American customs duties in his speech, it is by minimizing them. They would not be “eternal”, while the agreements with the EU are an attack on “the spirit of independence of Switzerland”. In summary, the threat is mainly in Brussels, not in Washington.
