A violent thunderstorm struck Savoy and northern Italy. Several localities have reported unpublished floods and large mudslides. In Italy, a 70 -year -old man was killed following the rise of waters.

A sudden thunderstorm and intense rains: Savoy and northern Italy were the scene of meteorological disturbances of unprecedented violence. The village of Modane has seen a wave of devastating mud on Monday, June 30, linked to the sudden mounted from Charmaix.

In just a few minutes, the river went from tens of centimeters above the dikes. On the spot, the authorities speak of the “most important flood in 70 years”: at least 15 people had to be relocated. The sudden mounted of the waters has also caused large material damage.

Several meteorologists explain that these floods are linked to a stormy cell which has formed above the mountains, in the Alps: this is a localized phenomenon … but which has had very heavy repercussions on the other side of the border, in Italy. The sudden rise in waters, made at least one dead this Monday, June 30 in northwestern Italy, announced the authorities. The 70 -year -old man was swept away by a torrent of water and mud after getting out of his van in the Alpine city of Bardonecchia, in the Piedmont region, located near the French border.

Phenomena that have become “frequent”

“We are increasingly confronted with emergency situations due to weather phenomena that we once called exceptional, but which are today increasingly frequent,” said the president of the region, Alberto Cirio, on social networks. “Today, a bomb of water suddenly struck the city of Bardonecchia, causing damage and unfortunately doing a victim,” he said. In the afternoon, the mayor of the city advised the inhabitants not to leave their home and not to approach the bridges, because the sudden bad weather had brought the river out of the Fréjus from his bed.

The violent thunderstorms that hit the Alps transformed the stream that crosses Bardonecchia into a river of mud. A deja vu for the town of Alta Valsusa, who had experienced an almost identical situation in August two years ago.
