The increase in prices of digital games on the PlayStation Store in Brazil and Turkey arouses the ire of users

Sony has changed video game prices in some countries such as Brazil and Turkey. The company has discreetly increased the price of PlayStation digital securities, arousing the indignation of the community. This last price increase follows an increase in the price of the PlayStation Plus subscription service.

The price of a plethora of PlayStation games in Brazil has increased to 400 Brazilian reais (BRL), or around 73 US dollars. The game Death Stranding 2: On the beach, recently released, went from 349.90 BRL to 399.90 BRL, whileAstro Bot et Silent Hill increase by around 50 BRL each.

To put things in perspective, these prices represent 26 % of the Brazilian minimum wage, which means that it is rather difficult for the PS5 owners of the region to add new games to their digital library. Although the price of physical copies has not been affected, it could change due to the economic uncertainty that reigns in the country. The Brazilian news site on video games, Gamevicio, has drawn up a list of the titles concerned.

In the process, Turkish users have expressed their disdain for the increase in prices on the Subreddit R/PlayStation. The message collected 467 positive votes and 216 comments before being deleted by the moderators.

The next exclusive title to the PlayStation, Ghost of Yōteihas an updated digital price of 3,449 Turkish pounds, or 87 USD. To put things in perspective, the average monthly income in Türkiye is 7,830, so a digital license for Ghost of Yōtei is equivalent to 20 % of a person’s salary.

In a press release published by Gamevicio, here is how Sony justifies this change of price:

Sony Interactive Entertainment has updated the pricing of the content of the PlayStation Store due to difficult market conditions, in particular the fluctuation of exchange rates. As a result, Brazil has increased the prices of PS Store games and additional content. Price decisions vary according to the regions and are based on the current economic environment.

The community of players is unhappy, fans commenting on price increases by calling them “ridiculous” and “unjustified”, some users have decided to give up other digital purchases. Comparisons are made with other platforms like Steam, where users are currently taking advantage of summer sales.

Although other countries are not affected by price changes, circumstances could change in the future. The PS5 digital publishing price increased from $ 399.99 to $ 449.99. Economic uncertainty and inflation are increasing, and the price of video games could soon increase worldwide, Nintendo being the first to introduce a price of $ 80 for some of its first part titles to accompany the Switch 2.
