For almost 20 years, electronic cigarettes have been gaining popularity from year to year. Behind the emergence of this product, a promise. These “vapoters” would be much less dangerous than conventional cigarettes. Faced with a lower danger (on paper at least), the young people were the first to adopt these new kinds of cigarettes.
But in a study published this June 25 in the journal ACS Central Science, scientists have just put their finger on a major problem for these “vapoteuses”. They tested very popular disposable products, but they all contained dangerous metals such as lead, chrome and nickel.
Very harmful cigarettes
It has proven that the inhalation of these toxins increases the risk of cancer, respiratory disease and nerve damage. However, disposable electronic cigarettes are those that emit the most of these metals. Their rates are much higher than other cigarettes, whether traditional or electronic.
One of the brands tested in this experience has released larger amounts of lead in a day of use than 20 classic cigarette packs. Researchers logically concluded that a new regulation should arrive as quickly as possible. They point out in particular the massive use of these “vapotuses” in adolescents and young people in general.
For Professor Brett Poulin, co-author of this study and deputy professor of environmental toxicology at the University of California, this research work highlights “The hidden risk of these new disposable electronic cigarettes. »»
Prohibited products?
In France disposable electronic cigarettes are prohibited for sale Since February 26. According to the Ministry of Health, these products were “particularly popular among adolescents”. In addition to the obvious health risk represented by the “puffs”, these devices, for single use, were very dangerous environmental waste.
Thoughts to be thrown, they are not or very little recycled, and their concentration of heavy metals is a real problem for the planet. Only one of these disposable cigarettes can pollute hundreds of liters of water.
This is not the first time that science has tackled the problem of disposable cigarettes. Other previous studies had already highlighted the very harmful composition of these products. This new research work focuses on the system itself, just as harmful to user health.
As a reminder, smoking kills. Each year 8 million people die because of tobacco -related products. It has been proven that the electronic cigarette is not anecdotal. Its use greatly increases the risk of heart disease and pulmonary disorders.
