Housing crisis | More than 2,000 households looking for a house

More than 2,000 households are currently looking for a roof on this fateful moving day.

In the morning, there were exactly 2022 households actively accompanied by the Quebec Housing Company (SHQ) in order to find accommodation, according to the organization. This figure includes households looking for housing since 2024, but also some who live in housing they may lose.

“Our goal is to leave no one on the street. The help is there, ”recalls the director of communications for the SHQ, Sébastien Olivier.

Last night, it was rather about 1926 households at risk of losing accommodation or without accommodation. During the night, 96 households were added to the list.

Emergency dwellings, relocation to relatives, unhappy accommodation, around forty assistance services are available. As a last resort, the hotel is offered by the state.

Nearly 350 more households that last year use housing assistance services. This significant increase is explained by the lack of affordable housing, according to Véronique Laflamme, spokesperson for the Popular Action Front in urban redevelopment.

“We really feel the effects of the increase in rent” of 5.9 % announced in January by the administrative housing court, she said in an interview.

The organization requires greater supervision of the private market, in particular to tackle illegal evictions and abusive rent increases, but also to improve the non -profit social and community housing offer.
