“We are especially happy that it will not happen to someone else, that’s the most important thing. It was a long process, an event, but it’s over, “Guy Bonnier commented on Tuesday at the Montreal courthouse.

A few minutes earlier, this father was sitting in the courtroom with his spouse, Jasmine Lebeau, a few meters from François Pelletier, the assassin of his daughter, Romane Bonnier. Only a glass wall separated them.

Then, the jury entered the room, envelope in hand. After more than a month of trial and three full days of deliberation, the verdict was going to be returned.

“Toped with first degree murder,” said the president of the jury solemnly.

By these few words, the fate of the 39 -year -old assassin was sealed: he will receive life prison, without the possibility of parole before having served at least 25 years of penitentiary.

Despite this, Pelletier remained of marble, looking straight ahead.

Extreme anger

The murder of M^me Bonnier, 24, had occurred in October 2021. The young artist who dreamed of playing in musicals had just won a first professional role.

But her dreams about to come true were destroyed by Pelletier, an ex-obsessive ex-gypsy that she had briefly attended.

Armed with a knife in one hand and a bouquet of flowers in the other, he waited for her to leave her home in order to follow her and kill her, while she was walking in the city center of the Metropolis. He stabbed her over 20 times, in front of horrified passers -by.

Not mental health

During the trial, it had been revealed that the assassin and his victim had had a “very brief, but intense” relationship a few months ago, which had not ended to the satisfaction of Pelletier.

He had started to send the young artist to the avalanches of messages. Patience, the young woman answered her, but the more time passed, the more she did not know what to do.

“You are my last and only chance for love …”, had written the assassin, a few months before the murder.

During the trial, Pelletier, who defends himself alone, had tried to plead criminal non-responsibility due to mental disorders.

But M^es Marianna Ferraro and Louis Bouthillier de la Couronne had an expert testify, the D^r Gilles Chamberland, who demolished this theory by raising that Pelletier had acted more by anger.

The jury has leaned for this theory.

Pelletier will return to the Court in August, so that his sentence is formalized. Relatives of m^me Bonnier will also be able to testify to the impact that the drama has had on them. But already, they wanted to thank Judge François Dadour for having completed this trial.
