It is a tradition each year at the Belgian Statistics Office Statbel: what are the most given names in Belgium?
Olivia and Noah in mind in Belgium
Olivia and Noah were again the most given names to Belgian newborns last year.
Olivia occupies first place among girls for the sixth consecutive year, even if the number of births bearing this first name continues its drop (531 in 2024, 56 less than in 2023). Emma and Louise complete the female podium with 455 and 432 births respectively. The feminine top 10 records a few movements: Mia enters 10th position, Juliette continues her progression by climbing in 9th place, while Anna fell from 8th to 11th position.
In boys, Noah comes first. A total of 582 children received this first name in 2024. Arthur (559 babies) and Jules (478 babies) arrive in 2nd and 3rd position.
Sofia and Adam in Brussels
In the Brussels Region, the classification is not the same. Thus, for girls, Sofia, Nour, Inaya, Maria, Amira and Yasmine are part of the Top 10.
On the boys side, Adam arrives on the first step of the podium, followed by Mohamed, Gabriel, Ibrahim and Noah.
Maria and Marc, number 1 in the entire population
In the entire Belgian population, Maria remains the most widespread female first name with 100,634 women bearing this first name, ahead of Marie (84.181), Nathalie (39,620), Martine (39.206) and Anne (35,724).
Among men, Marc dominates with 60,354 carriers, followed by Jean (57.393) and Patrick (49.070). These first names “embodied a generation born mainly in the 1950s to 1970s“, Specifies Statbel.
Peeters and Janssens are the most common family names
In the department of family names, Peeters (30,375 occurrences), Janssens (27.692) and Maes (24.056) maintain their top trio, followed by Jacobs (18,643) and Mertens (17.513).
