Legault in Sept-Îles for an “important” announcement on aluminum

The Prime Minister of Quebec, François Legault, will be in Sept-Îles on Friday. He will go to Alouette alumina to make an “important economic announcement concerning the aluminum sector in Quebec”, can be read in a media invitation.

This visit occurs a few months after the alumina has announced that it had to invest $ 1 billion if Hydro-Québec was ready to revise its prices in a future supply agreement.

Two days ago, the financial and economic information agency Bloomberg even argued that Alouette was to invest $ 1.5 billion to modernize its facilities in Sept-Îles.

The news agency also indicated that aluminum has concluded a new electricity supply agreement with Hydro-Québec. The Crown Company did not respond to our request for information on this subject.

Accompanied by Minister Kateri Champagne Jourdain, Prime Minister François Legault had met the team made up of 950 workers from Alouette alumina, in Sept-Îles, in January 2025.

Alouette aluminum will comment on Friday noon

The investment was not confirmed by Alouette. The company said it would not comment on this information before Friday noon.

Prime Minister Legault will first meet the management of the North-Côotière aluminum before addressing the media representatives at the end of the morning.

For the occasion, the Prime Minister will be accompanied in particular by the Minister of the Economy, Innovation and Energy, Christine Fréchette, and the Minister of Employment, head of the Côte-Nord region, Kateri Champagne Jourdain.

Already palpable enthusiasm in the region

For the mayor of Port-Cartier, Alain Thibault, such an investment would be beneficial for SMEs and workers in his municipality. The modernization project could, among other things, make it possible to create jobs, according to him.
