Still rare, screens in Swiss nurseries are not subject to measures – RTS.CH

While the screens have recently been prohibited in France in crèches due to the risks they have for the development of children, they do not seem to worry in Switzerland, where their use in the reception structures remains marginal.

Tablets, phones, computers and televisions have been banished since Thursday in French crèches. The National Charter for Home Childhood has been changed and now prohibited from exhibiting any child under 3 years of age to a screen given the risks for its development.

In Switzerland, there are no specific recommendations for exposure to screens in crèches.

“Very few nurseries use screens for work with children,” says Christina Hanke, member of the Kibesuisse steering committee, the Swiss association for the reception of early childhood. “It doesn’t seem to be a widespread problem.”

In the rare cases where they are used, screens are used to tell stories or listen to music, specifies the manager, which is based on a study by the Marie Meierhofer Institute for the child.

Support measures

For pro childhood, the French -speaking platform for the reception of childhood, the reception structures must have the choice to introduce or not digital tools. However, the association considers important to anticipate the theme and not to leave crèches alone in the face of screens.

“This presupposes to give them the means to work in good conditions with, for example, an adequate supervision rate, working time to develop adequate projects or requirements”, notes the general secretary of the platform, Sandrine Bavaud.

According to a Study of the Action Innocence Foundationchildren under 3 are exposed about two hours a day to a screen directly or indirectly.
