Can we do more French than a pétanque application? On X, the developer Pierre Boudoin has shared his new project since the end of May 2025: software designed to assist you during your ball games. Thanks to augmented reality, Petanque Measure: Socheonnet Indicates which team is winning and estimates the hundreds of the distance between a ball and the junk.

Petanque meter: jack has been available exclusively on the App Store since the beginning of July. Its developer uses several technologies exclusive to the iPhone to make it work, such as Swiftui for the interface or Coreml for the measurement (it indicates in Numerama having led to its own model for ball detection). The software is free, but a premium subscription at 1.99 euros per month is required to take unlimited measures. It can quickly be profitable in summer, but some could still be discouraged to use it for this reason.
In Petanque Meter, users can use the camera to photograph a scene and put the jack in the center. Thanks to calculations in the background, the application will indicate the precise distance between each ball and the jack. The animations are rather successful, with many indications so as not to be mistaken.
If he is not technically the first to have imagined such a system (there are other applications to measure the distance between the balls), Pierre Boudoin puts on a simple interface, in line with the visual language of iOS, to make its application attractive. The App Cuchonnet is not content to measure the distance between balls: it also incorporates a system for calculating points and team management. The developer presents it as “The ideal application for all pétanque lovers ».
