How does this affect you?
Concretely, Microsoft will no longer publish updates for Windows 10. If your computer still uses this operating system, it will continue to operate, but it will become an easy target of cyberattacks (viruses, ransomicials, etc.). As they will know that the vulnerabilities found after October 14 will not be corrected, malicious actors will be able to exploit them.
In addition, your software will become incompatible with Windows 10 over time, and in the event of a problem, no technical support from Microsoft will be offered.
All users are targeted, regardless of the Windows 10 version: family, professional or education. They will all have to adapt.
Why this change?
Windows 10, released in 2015, arrives at the end of his life cycle. Microsoft is now focusing on its more modern, efficient and secure successor, depending on the company.
What are your options?
- Update : Start by checking if your computer is compatible with Windows 11: Go to Parameters > Windows updates To see if the free upgrade is offered to you. If yes, you can install it without problem.
- Buy a new device: If you do not see the option of adopting Windows 11, it is probably due to the age of your computer or its parts. You can therefore consider buying a compatible device equipped with Windows 11 which will serve you for the years to come.
You can force the update on a non -compatible device, but it is not recommended, since your computer may encounter problems if it does not meet the minimum requirements of Windows 11.
To help you select the computer that suits you best, see our tests.
- Continue your use: If your computer is not compatible with Windows 11 and you do not want to buy a new device, you can continue to use Windows 10. However, your device will be more and more vulnerable to viruses and ransomics.
- Opt for another operating system : You can also abandon Windows and turn to Linux, a popular alternative operating system, free, and lighter than Windows.
- Pay for extended updates: Microsoft offers an extensive security update program (ESU) for individuals and companies that need additional time to adapt.
This paid service (30 USD $ for individuals) will be offered until 2028 and will double price each year. It will continue to receive security fixes and official technical support.
