WINNIPEG, MB, July 4. 2025 / CNW/ – In order to resolve the housing crisis in Canadaimmediate measures should be taken to reduce costs. In order to provide the Canadian population with better access to affordable and sustainable housing, the government has today announced the inauguration of the residential ensemble located at 380, rue Young. This set is the result of a previously announced combined investment of more than $ 17 million intended for the construction of 69 dwellings for natives, especially those who study at the University of Winnipegand people needing affordable accommodation to Winnipegau Manitoba.
The announcement was made by the Honorable Rebecca Chartrand, Minister of Affairs of the North and the Arctic, Minister responsible for the Canadian Agency for Economic Development of the North and Federal MP for Churchill-Keewatinook Aski, as well as by chief Maureen Brown of the Nation Cie d’Opaskwayak.
The building of 69 apartments located at 380, rue Young belongs to the Cree Nation of Opaskwayak. He is adjacent to the University of Winnipeg. More than 40 % of the rents of housing located in this residential set fitted out in partnership with Paragon Living will be greatly reduced in order to counter the significant shortage of affordable rental housing at Winnipeg. The rents of these dwellings start at $ 681 per month and include high -speed Internet access and water. The building is entirely rented, and 40 % of tenants are First Nations members who have moved outside their reserve to attend the University of Winnipeg or who are currently living in Winnipeg. Historically, the transition from the reserve to the city to go to university is a challenge for several people. A new apartment building located next to the University of Winnipegbelonging to the nation shouting from Opaskwayak and offering affordable rents, will aim to facilitate this transition.
As we build a Canadian solid home sector, targeted collaboration will be essential. It will therefore be necessary to work hand in hand with the non -profit sector to reduce costs and build housing on a scale and at an unequaled speed since the Second World War.
