Menopause: plants against hot flashes?

Previous research has clearly demonstrated that diets rich in ultra-transformed food in addition to an increase in calorie intake, cause weight gain but also other cardiometabolic disorders, linked to the excess of added sugars, saturated fatty acids and sodium and their poverty in fiber and other essential nutrients.

The study Analysis the data of participants distributed to follow a vegan diet poor in fat, supplemented by soybeans, and an omnivorous control group. The consumption data of processed foods and the intensity of heat puffs, to menopause have been taken into account. The heat puffs experienced by the participants of the 2 groups, in inclusion, were comparable in terms of frequency and intensity. The analysis reveals that,

  • At 12 weeks, severe hot flashes decreased 92 % in the vegan group and have not changed significantly in the control group;
  • The average body weight decreased 3.6 kilos in the vegan group and 0.2 kg in the control group;
  • These curiously changes are less affected by the input of highly processed food or, on the contrary, not very transformed;
  • On the other hand, the origin of food, animal or vegetable, is decisive in these results, thus confirming the hypothesis that foods of animal and plant origin have a different effect on body weight and on heat puffs, whatever their degree of transformation.

In this purpose, soybeans seem to play a more decisive role.

In summary, the study highlights the potential positive effects of a soy -rich plant diet on hot flashes and weight management. A vegetarian or vegan diet therefore has specific advantages, around menopause.
