Cruise: passenger found dead after having disappeared during a stopover in Alaska

A passenger of a cruise by Norwegian Cruise Line was allegedly found lifeless Thursday morning in Alaska after going down from the boat on Tuesday for a solo hiking morning, during a stopover in Juneau.

The body of the Dre Maritis Buenafe, a 62 -year -old woman from Kentucky, was said to have been located in the morning of a team from the Alaska National Guard on Thursday on a helicopter, reported the “New York Times”.

The sixties, who was traveling aboard the Norwegian Bliss of the Norwegian Cruise Line with her mother and sister, was missing on Tuesday, after she did not return from a solo hike during a ship’s stopover in Juneau in Alaska.

That morning, the woman had her two relatives text to inform them of the fact that she was heading for the Mont Roberts tramway to go on the Gold Ridge hiking to Pic Gastineau. Subsequently, it was radio silence.

“The last time we have heard from her was by SMS at 7:35 a.m. she knew that the return to the ship was scheduled for 1 p.m. We had no response to our many texts and calls […] The cruise company did not let me land before departure. Tomorrow, mom and I take the plane for Juneau, ”said her sister Melody Buenafe on Facebook on Wednesday in a call for help.

The duo would then have contacted the police and a ground research operation and by helicopter would have been triggered to try to find the woman, “until the weather and the dark conditions make operations too dangerous,” she continued.

It was not until Thursday that his body was finally located lifeless at around 510 meters under the crest of Gold Ridge, said Austin McDaniel, spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Security of Alaska, according to the “New York Times”.

The circumstances surrounding his death were not specified.

This sector is particularly popular with hikers, but according to the spokesman, it is important to prepare well by eating warm clothes, provisions and a communication device, while “excursions in the Alaska hinterland can go from a simple day to a real challenge in the event of a false step or fall”.

In an interview with “Alaska’s News Source”, he enjoined visitors to always inform a close to his route and his clothing to facilitate research if necessary.

“If you do not return in time, they can alert the first stakeholders, the research and rescue teams, the soldiers, so that we can immediately start to formulate a plan and activate the resources to help you get out of the field,” he said.
