The United States adopts new sanctions to restrict Iranian weapons
The American government adopted new sanctions on Friday to prevent Tehran from obtaining components useful for its defense industry on the eighth day of the war between Iran and Israel supported by Washington.
Eight organizations and a person are placed under sanctions “For their involvement in the acquisition and transhipment of sensitive devices for the Iranian defense industry”according to a press release from the American Treasury Department, which does not specify nature.
“The United States remains determined to thwart any effort from Iran to obtain technologies, components and devices sensitive with double use [civil et militaire]which are the basis of the programs “ Armament of the Iranian regime, says the secretary of the Treasury, Scott Bessent, quoted in the text.
The American government also announced on Friday sanctions against several people and organizations accused of working to finance the Yemeni Houthist rebels, supported by Tehran. Their actions have, according to a press release, “Generate significant revenues by selling oil and other products on the black market in Yemen and by engaging in smuggling operations in ports controlled by Houthists”.
Economic sanctions lead to the freezing of the assets held in the United States by the people and the target entities. They also prohibit companies based in the United States and American citizens to do business with organizations and people targeted by sanctions, at the risk of being punished in turn.
