The Ministry of Transport hardens the measures and extends the recall to all equipped vehicles

“Without delay the results of the new expertise”, Philippe Tabarot announces this Tuesday, June 24, “two additional measures” on Tuesday, June 24. From now on, all vehicles equipped with these defective airbags are affected by the recall, whatever their brand.

The Ministry of Transport reinforces its system again aimed at responding to the Takata airbags scandal. A few days after the last accident – the death of a 37 -year -old mother in Reims on June 11, following the outbreak of her airbags -, the Ministry of Transport wishes “Reseval the risk analysis” To avoid new dramas. And announce this Tuesday, June 24, “Without delay the results of new expertise […] As a precautionary measure, two additional measures ”.

Concretely, Philippe Tabarot first demands the “General reminder” Of all the vehicles equipped with Takata airbags, all brands combined, throughout the territory, including the overseas regions and departments. And this “Whatever their age”. “This decision aims to send a clear and firm message to manufacturers, while encouraging the owners of the vehicles concerned to have their vehicle checked as soon as possible”specifies the Ministry of Transport.

At the same time, the ministry announces the extension of «stop drive» To all vehicles equipped with Takata airbags in the overseas departments and regions (DROM) and Corsica, as well as all models equipped with Takata Airbags “Made until 2011”in mainland France outside Corsica. Drivers must therefore “Stop using their vehicle and […] Contact their brand’s dealer or garage owner without dealerships ”.

These new measures mean that 800,000 additional vehicles will be placed in «stop drive» and 600,000 additional vehicles placed as a simple reminder. In total, including the stock of vehicles which are already being repaired, this brings to 2.5 million the number of vehicles recalled, including 1.7 million in «stop drive». Enough to pass the share of vehicles in «stop drive» From 40% to 70%, it is explained to the Ministry of Transport. “The Minister does not exclude taking other measures in the coming weeks”also warns the government.
