The roads of the department are the most “degraded” in France, according to the Court of Auditors

The Ile-de-France road network is 621 km of national roads, four million motorists and traffic among the densest in Europe. And these are also the “most degraded network” roads “, according to a report by the Court of Auditors. The jurisdiction responsible for controlling the regularity of public accounts denounces an too limited budget of the institution in charge of these roads, the Directorate of the Roads of ÃŽle-de-France (Dirif), but also a lack of monitoring of the teams on the ground on the part of this direction and a tense social climate.

The infrastructure is deemed aging, especially due to the budget envelope – nearly 170 million euros – which seems insufficient at the Court: “The overall maintenance and exploitation budget is, in current euros, at the same level as ten years ago”, she denounces.

Tense social climate

Regarding the fight against pollution and noise, the DIREF “does not always have the required skills and data”, points out the jurisdiction, while the network would require “modernization and standards effort”. It is not, moreover, that the Dirif does not intervene on the field, on the contrary: its interventions are numerous, due to the dense circulation and the many accidents which result from it. But these interventions “are not the subject of sufficient follow -up on the part of the management”, laments the court, which recommends the use of a national digital tool that the Dirif would be reluctant to use.

Finally, it suffers from a social climate which may have been “extremely tense” in the past and the “sometimes residence locally”, especially due to differences in remuneration poorly understood between its employees. To deal with these treatment inequalities, the Court recommends making an annual assessment of compliance with regulations.
