Employment increasing in Canada for the first time since January

Canada has experienced its first employment in June since January, have revealed the most recent data from Statistics Canada.

Employment increased by 0.4% in the sixth month of the year. Part -time work, with growth of 1.8%, is largely responsible for this increase.

Of the approximately 83,100 new jobs created in June, 34,000 come from the wholesale and retail trade sector and 17,000 are in that of health care and social assistance.

Only the agricultural sector has undergone notable job losses, with 6000 positions removed, according to Statistics Canada. Employment has varied little in other sectors.

The unemployment rate in the country has dropped below 7% thanks to a drop of 0.1 percentage point; It therefore set up at 6.9% in June.

Quebec has registered an increase in employment of 0.5%, a second increase in three months. This increase is mainly due to wholesale and detail trade, where the number of jobs has climbed 2.1%.

Despite this increase in employment, the province has still experienced an increase in the unemployment rate of half a percentage to 6.3%.

This publication is the last concerning employment before the decision of monetary policy of the Bank of Canada expected for July 30.

“Although the unemployment rate is still high, other figures clearly decrease the chances of a rate reduction on the share of the Banque du Canada in July,” said Katherine Judge, an economist at CIBC Capital Markets.

On Thursday evening, US President Donald Trump again targeted Canada, imposing 35% surcharge, one of the highest rates announced since the start of the week, accusing the United States’s first trading partner for retalling his customs duties.
