“I signed up for karate at 7 to practice this sport […] to finally make me abuse. You abused me, all of this is your fault, “said a victim of Réal Chayer on Monday at the Joliette courthouse.
For two decades, the pedophile attacked at least 11 teenagers, sometimes as young as 10 years. The fallen professor pleaded guilty to sixty accusations in November.
Parents’ confidence
His victims all frequented his school of karate, who was a storefront in Repentigny. He woven his canvas around them. Most saw him as a mentor, venerated him and devoted him to admiration. Even parents trust him.

The crown requires a “exemplary and dissuasive” sentence of 20 years of detention. In Quebec, few sex offenders received such magnitude a sentence.
The defense rather proposed an 11 -year sentence. In a long, rather disjointed tirade, Chayer justified her crimes by her difficult past.
The predator invited adolescents to his residence or to his teepee, where he made them play beer pong And to questions, consulting questions. He took advantage of these moments to coax them and assault them sexually. Then, he bought the silence of some thanks to “samurai pacts”.
“I feel bad, I feel weak not to have been able to talk about it,” testified an assaulted boy. He finally denounced “to be sure that no other child has to live” the abuses of Chayer.
For parents of victims, the pedophile has squarely “stolen freedom”, the youth and the innocence of these young people. They also live with a feeling of shame of having entrusted their children to the predator.
“Before he even put his hand on our children, he looked at ours and convinced us of his good intentions and her kindness,” said the mother-in-law of a victim.
A recurrence
The legal proceedings revealed that the man of Saint-Lin-Laurentians had criminal history, which he had obviously managed to hide. In June 1998, he received 90 days in prison to serve weekends for sexual exploitation of three victims.
A boy assaulted after wondering how Chayer was able to find himself again in the presence of children without the authorities intervening. Recall that the pedophile opened its Academy of Martial Arts Drakshido in April 2000, even before the end of its two -year probation.
“He knew how to play his game perfectly to thwart everyone and satisfy his offense desires,” he deplored.
In a rare procedure, the crown also wishes to enter Chayer’s home as a violation. The pedophile opposes it.

“The house was used to bait the victims, to commit offenses, and to do so out of the gaze of parents unlike the Karate school where they could come,” said Me Marie-Ève Sasseville, procure of the crown.
Judge François Landry will render his decision in October.
What they said
“My friend, my mentor, my karate teacher, the one who encouraged me to exceed my limits. Whoever received my secrets, I had a lot of fun with him. At the dawn of my 30th birthday, I gained all the extent of the abuse. ” – a victim
“Réal Chayer completely stole the memories of my childhood and part of my adolescence. I am almost unable to remember anything before the assault. My defense mechanism was that of forgetting so hard, to the point of thinking that it never happened. ” – Another victim
“I paid serious attention to take all the lessons when [mon fils] started at 7-8 years old. As a protective father, I wanted to trust before letting him make his karate freely. I waited several years before lowering my guard. I was wrong, and I’m deeply sad. I’m ashamed. ” – The father of a victim
“The victims cannot believe that this individual has already passed through the system, that he has already received a sentence and that he [a récidivé]. They want to be heard, that the system is held and sends the message that its crimes are unacceptable and will be punished severely. ” – Me Marie-Ève Sasseville, prosecutor of the crown
