Tenant evictions are multiplying
In French -speaking Switzerland, tenants’ expulsions are increasing. In several cities, forced executions have reached unpublished levels, according to the Genève tribune and 24 hours.
In Renens, they jumped 12% in 2024; In Geneva, the police intervened 239 times, a record. “The rent increases – unjustified in an overwhelming majority of cases – and the decrease in the financial capacity of the middle classes are the two main explanations for this phenomenon”, according to Fabrice Berney, secretary general of ASLOCA Vaud.
The legal framework allows rapid expulsion after 30 days of formal notice. In Berne, the Geneva national socialist advisor Christian Dandrès tried to alert in 2023, already, on the subject. But the Federal Council replied that cantonal law prevails.
UN agencies: abolition of 30,000 jobs in Geneva
International Geneva. The UN agencies face a major budgetary crisis, which can lead to the abolition of 20,000 to 30,000 jobs, mainly in Geneva, writes the Tribune de Genève.
The drastic reduction in American international aid, which has removed a credit of 400 million for the UN, is the main trigger. The 1.5 billion dollars in arrears of contributions from the United States for 2025 is an aggravating element.
Added to this are the delays in payment of 41 Member States and the drop in voluntary donations. Furthermore, the UN80 reform wanted by the UN Secretary General “has become the framework of a systemic reduction in the workforce rather than the reform of efficiency initially envisaged”, according to Wayan Vota de Career Pivot, which has identified the threatened jobs in the UN agencies. The Devex platform indicates it a fall of 43 % of recruitments.
A grant classified as a project of public utility?
The Cantonal Zugois government awarded 5,000 francs from the Lottery Fund to the cantonal section of the Aktion Für Vernftige Energiepolitik Schweiz (Aves) for the organization of an anniversary event, reports Blick.
Aves, considered favorable to nuclear, defended energy positions. Federal councilor UDC Albert Rösti was the star guest of the demonstration.
The grant has been classified as a project of public utility, although the directives prohibit the financing of projects with political content. The Director of Zugois Finance, Heinz Tännler, justified the payment by invoking the ideal orientation of the Aves. The ecological politician Luzian Franzini strongly criticized this decision, deeming it “completely questionable”.
