Children’s screen time is the source of disputes in 55% of families in Switzerland and 46% of parents find it difficult to enforce the agreed schedules. They are 51% to have difficulty limiting access to certain platforms and applications.

(Keystone-ATS) The use of the smartphone divides many families with children aged 6 to 17 years. This is the conclusion of Cybersorgenmonitor published Tuesday by the AXA insurance group. The Sotomo survey institute conducted the investigation.

Almost all parents interviewed limit the activities of their offspring on the Internet. In addition to time regulation, they prohibit or restrict access to certain online platforms.

All respondents are making a critical look at the use of the Internet by children. Thus, four -fifths of them are in favor of the ban on mobile phones in schools and an age limit of 16 for social media platforms. According to the AXA monitor, 43% of individuals consider cyberbullying as one of the greatest dangers for children.

For 40% of them, cybergroomig, manipulation of children for sexual content, is a risk while 37% perceive sexual content as dangers. Finally, 36% of respondents consider excessive use of the Internet by adolescents as a significant source of danger.

Parental duty

Eighty-five percent of parents start from the principle that children are not informed of the dangers of the Internet. For 89% of them, it is the duty of parents to inform them and for 77%, it is also a task of the school.

Seventy percent of parents of minor children feel capable of assuming this task, but 38% indicate that they cannot sufficiently protect their offspring against cyberrises.

Asked about the use of the internet adapted to age, all respondents decide on average for online games from ten years old, for video platforms from 13 years old and for unlimited internet access from 14 years.

Regarding Tiktok, criticized for the risk of addiction that the social network can generate, 48% of parents ask for a ban for all age groups, 39% oppose it and the rest is undecided. The Axa Cybersoins barometer was produced by Sotomo between the end of February and mid-March with 1706 people in German-speaking Switzerland and French-speaking Switzerland.
